Appearance: The Japanese Coris Wrasse (Coris musume) is a striking and rarely encountered wrasse known for its distinctive coloration and attractive patterning. Like many members of the genus Coris, its appearance changes as the fish matures, with adults developing more pronounced coloration and markings.
Natural Habitat: Native to the Northwest Pacific, including southern Japan, the Izu and Ogasawara Islands, and Taiwan. It is associated with deeper waters and sandy-bottom habitats near rocky reef environments.
Behavior: An active, energetic wrasse that appreciates plenty of open swimming space along with rockwork for shelter. A sandy substrate is recommended, as Coris wrasses naturally bury themselves in the sand for protection and while resting.
Diet: Carnivorous. Offer a varied diet of high-quality meaty marine foods, including appropriately sized crustacean-based foods and other prepared foods for marine carnivores.
Aquarium Notes: The Japanese Coris Wrasse is extremely rare in the marine aquarium trade, with very few specimens becoming available. Its combination of striking coloration, active behavior, and scarcity makes it a particularly unusual offering for experienced marine aquarists. Provide a mature aquarium with excellent water quality, ample swimming space, rockwork, and a suitable sand bed.
