Banded Houndshark (Triakis scyllium)

Scientific Name: Triakis scyllium
Common Name: Banded Houndshark
Family: Triakidae
Adult Size: Up to approximately 5 feet (150 cm)

Appearance: The Banded Houndshark (Triakis scyllium) is a slender, bottom-dwelling shark recognized by the distinctive dark bands and saddle-like markings that cross its gray body. These markings are typically most prominent in younger animals and may become less noticeable with age. It has a short, rounded snout and broad pectoral fins.

Natural Habitat: Native to the northwestern Pacific, including waters around Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and portions of the Russian Far East. It inhabits shallow coastal waters, bays, and estuaries and is commonly associated with sandy bottoms, rocky areas, eelgrass beds, and seaweed-covered habitats.

Behavior: Generally a bottom-oriented species that spends much of its time cruising or resting near the substrate. It is often more active during the evening and nighttime hours and may occasionally gather with others while resting.

Diet: Carnivorous. In the wild, the Banded Houndshark feeds primarily on bottom-dwelling crustaceans, other invertebrates, and small fish. In captivity, offer a varied diet of high-quality marine-based meaty foods.

Aquarium Notes: Due to its potential adult size of approximately 5 feet, the Banded Houndshark requires a very large, specialized marine aquarium with substantial open bottom space for swimming and turning. A soft, sandy substrate, excellent water quality, strong filtration, and high dissolved oxygen levels are important considerations. Tankmates should be selected carefully and should not be small enough to be considered prey.
