Spotted Knifejaw (Oplegnathus punctatus)

Scientific Name: Oplegnathus punctatus
Common Name: Spotted Knifejaw / Spotted Beakfish
Family: Oplegnathidae
Adult Size: Up to approximately 34 inches (86 cm)

Appearance: The Spotted Knifejaw (Oplegnathus punctatus) is a distinctive marine fish best known for its powerful, parrot-like beak formed by fused teeth. Juveniles have a light silvery-gray body covered with prominent dark spots. As they mature, females generally retain their spotted pattern, while adult males may become much darker with a contrasting pale or white snout.

Natural Habitat: Found throughout portions of the Indian and western Pacific Oceans, including waters around Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan. Adults are associated with rocky and coral reef environments, while young juveniles may be found near the surface sheltering among floating seaweed before transitioning to bottom-oriented reef habitats as they mature.

Behavior: An active and powerful fish that spends much of its time exploring rocky areas and reef structure in search of food. Its specialized beak allows it to crush and consume hard-shelled prey.

Diet: Carnivorous. In the wild, the Spotted Knifejaw feeds on hard-shelled invertebrates including mollusks, barnacles, sea urchins, and crustaceans. In captivity, offer a varied diet of high-quality meaty marine foods, including appropriately sized crustacean and mollusk-based foods.

Aquarium Notes: The Spotted Knifejaw can become a very large and powerful fish and requires a correspondingly large marine aquarium with substantial swimming space and secure rockwork. Due to its specialized crushing teeth and natural diet, it should not be considered safe with ornamental crustaceans, mollusks, or other desirable invertebrates. Tankmates should be selected with its eventual adult size and robust feeding behavior in mind.
