Appearance: The Blackear Candy Hogfish (Bodianus tanyokidus) is a striking and rarely encountered hogfish featuring a bright banana-yellow body with subtle pink coloration around the face and eyes. Its most distinctive feature is the elongated black spot near the gill cover, resembling a black ear or earring and giving the species its common name.
Natural Habitat: Found in deeper reef environments throughout the Indo-West Pacific, including areas from the western Indian Ocean to Japan, the Ryukyu Islands, and Guam. It has been recorded at depths of approximately 130–650 feet (40–200 meters), although it is most commonly associated with deeper waters.
Behavior: An active hogfish that appreciates open swimming space along with rockwork, caves, and crevices for shelter.
Diet: Carnivorous. In captivity, offer a varied diet of high-quality, appropriately sized meaty marine foods.
Aquarium Notes: The Blackear Candy Hogfish is an uncommon deepwater species and is rarely seen in the aquarium trade. Provide a well-established marine aquarium with excellent water quality, ample swimming space, and plenty of rockwork for shelter.
