Barite is a mineral with an interesting history, a crystal occurring in a wide variety of colors and forms. Named for the Greek word for “heavy”, it is largely mined as an industrial ore across the globe, with uses in various industries including oil drilling. As a mineral specimen or gemstone Barite can be found in many colors including vibrant reds, pinks, and blues as well as the more commonly encountered clear or pale white. Barite is often found in conjunction with Cerussite, or white lead ore, which is a brilliant mineral in the aragonite family known for its twinning crystalline structure and delicate form. Cerussite contains lead, so care should be taken when handling it. Use gloves and wash hands thoroughly.
