Appearance: The Sakura Anthias (Sacura margaritacea) is a stunning deepwater anthias known for its brilliant pink to reddish coloration reminiscent of cherry blossoms. Adult males are particularly striking, developing beautiful pearlescent white spots along the sides and elongated tail filaments.
Natural Habitat: Native to the Northwest Pacific, including waters around Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. It inhabits deeper rocky reef environments, often occurring along steep slopes and around gorgonian corals at depths of approximately 75–400 feet.
Behavior: Generally peaceful and active, Sakura Anthias may occur in groups in their natural environment. They appreciate plenty of swimming space along with rockwork and sheltered areas within the aquarium.
Diet: Carnivorous. Sakura Anthias are enthusiastic feeders and can be offered a varied diet of high-quality meaty marine foods, including krill, mysis shrimp, chopped shrimp, and other appropriately sized preparations.
Aquarium Notes: Unlike some more delicate anthias species, the Sakura Anthias is considered relatively hardy once properly acclimated and feeding. Provide a large, well-established marine aquarium with excellent water quality, ample swimming space, and plenty of rockwork. Generally considered reef-safe with corals, although caution should be used with very small ornamental shrimp or fish that could potentially be viewed as prey.
