Scientific Name: Centropyge interrupta
Common Name: Japanese Pygmy Angelfish / Japanese Angelfish
Family: Pomacanthidae
Adult Size: Up to approximately 6–8 inches (15–20 cm)
Origin: Captive Bred in Japan
Appearance: The Japanese Pygmy Angelfish (Centropyge interrupta) is a rare and exceptionally colorful dwarf angelfish. It features a brilliant orange to yellow-orange body covered with vibrant blue to purplish-blue spots. The coloration becomes increasingly purple toward the rear of the body, contrasting beautifully with its bright yellow tail.
Natural Habitat: Native to the western Pacific, particularly around southern Japan, the Izu Islands, and Ogasawara Islands. In the wild, the species inhabits rocky and coral reef environments and is associated with subtropical waters that can be somewhat cooler than those preferred by many tropical marine species.
Behavior: A bold and active dwarf angelfish that spends much of its time swimming around and exploring rockwork. Provide plenty of live rock with caves, crevices, and hiding areas where the fish can retreat and naturally graze.
Diet: Omnivorous. Offer a varied diet consisting of high-quality marine angelfish preparations, marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and appropriately sized pellets or flakes.
Aquarium Notes: These Japanese Pygmy Angelfish are captive bred in Japan, making them an especially unique offering of an already highly sought-after species. Provide a mature aquarium with excellent water quality, ample swimming room, and plenty of established rockwork. Like many dwarf angelfish, they are generally considered reef-safe with caution, as individual fish may nip at corals, clams, or other sessile invertebrates.
